Global PC HELP!!!

My GobalPC died today! I backed up everything on the hard disk as It's like a regular computer. Now that I have everything backed up. I got a lot of the programs to work with Breadbox Ensemble! However even though I have the GobalPc Demo and Newdeal Office 2000 I would like to be able to the full GobalPC desktop on my computer like EPA did. Maybe he can give me tips on how to do this since he has done it him self. However I believe the fastest way to get my GobalPC back is to have his VHD of the Gobalpc desktop software he made. I would even pay money for the VHD he made of the GobalPC. Any tips or tips or suggestions are most welcome.- Brett

Hi Brett!

First, the GlobalPC is just another x86 computer.
You can use any x86 PC, DOSBox or DOSEmu, to replace the GlobalPC. I
have by curiosity ran the GlobalPC in DOSBox on the Raspberry Pi, and it
worked fine, albeit a bit slow, but there was no way to use the
internet apps. If you want to use the internet part, too, I guess you
have to use DOSEmu, which will cost you some work. I can describe how I
did to set it up in DOSBox.

First I installed DOSBox on my Ubuntu laptop, you can also use Windows if you prefer that.

The
next step was to create a folder on my laptop, on Ubuntu it is
important that you create it in your user folder, in Windows I guess you
are more free to create it in your user folder or on the C: drive. In
Windows I suggest you name the folder DOS, if you intend to use DOSBox
for more than just one software, and in the DOS folder you create a
folder named GPC, or if you just want to use it for the Global PC why
not just calling it GPC. It is important to know that many have noticed
that GEOS will not work well if it is in the mounted root directory of
DOSBox, that is why you should put it in a folder.

Then you can
copy your Global PC backup to your GPC folder, in DOS\GPC, or just the
GPC folder. Omit the DOS directory from the GPC, you can also remove the
DOS files like autoexec.bat, config sys, command.com and so on. You
will just need the folders BIN, GEOS2000, GEOSAPPS, and GLOBALPC. I
think that the BIN and GEOSAPPS are not necessary, but since they are
part of the original GPC system, let them stat in the folder structure.

Next
step is to mount the folder in DOSBox, by edit the dosbox-074.conf, in
this you have to check how you do it depending on you operating system,
in windows, it may look like this, for example: mount c c:\dos\gpc or in
ubuntu (linux): mount c /home/username/DOSStart DOSBox and check that you can access the folder, and view the content, but don't start the "Globalpc"

Exit DOSBox

Copy the video driver from Ensemble or NDO2000, you will need VGA16.GEO, to SYSTEM, VIDEO in GEOS2000

Copy the filesystem drivers OS2.GEO and/or NTFAT.GEO to SYSTEM, FS in GEOS2000

You
might need a sound driver, if you want to have sound. I copied the
BSD16.GEO to the sound folder in SYSTEM, SOUND in GEOS2000

Now you will need to edit GEOS.INI in Globalpc, and NET.INI in Geos2000

Check
the paths in the [path] section in GEOS.INI, so the paths will
correspond to your settings. The last ini-line gave me some trouble, but
I fixed it by changing the line to: ini = C:\GPC\geos2000\net.ini, note
that might be diffrent for you, depending how you named the folders
previously.

Add the lines to [system] section in GEOS.INI:
fs = os2.geo
primaryFSD = os2.geo

Change the lines in [screen 0] in GEOS.INI and NET.INI to
:
device = VESA Compatible SuperVGA: 800x600 64K-color

driver = VESA 64K-color SVGA Driver

bigMousePointer = false

Change the lines in [sound]
in NET.INI to:
synthDriver = BSD16.GEO

sampleDriver = BSD16.GEO

volume = 40

balance = 50

driver = Soundblaster 16 driver

device = Soundblaster 16 (or compatible)

That is it. Try to start the Global PC, hopefully it will start now. If you have any questions just post them here.

BR,
Hans
