NewDeal does not officially support using NewDeal software
with Linux. However, some customers have had success by
running NewDeal in a DOS box using the shareware DOS emulator
DosEmu under Linux. Here are some tips, provided by
customers who are using Linux:
Make sure that you have your graphics card set up properly
in /etc/dosemu.conf. With some video boards, this works well
for standard VGA mode. With other video boards, you may have
to run NewDeal in EGA 640x350 mode. Some customers report that
NewDeal runs very quickly, while others report it runs very
slowly. This may be a result of Linux's support for video display
on the particular computer.
Some customers report better results when running NewDeal
in a window from XFree86, using a 256-color driver.
If you have difficulty accessing partitions, try giving
DosEmu full partition access (or even full disk access). NewDeal
is reported to be able to access mounted VSF directories if you
force-load the msnet.geo driver with this line in the [system]
section of the GEOS.INI file:
fs = msnet.geo
You might also want to force-load the CD ROM driver. In that
case, your GEOS.INI would contain:
fs = {
msnet.geo
cdrom.geo
}
For your mouse, use the driver "Nothing else works" in NewDeal
and the dosemu in-built mouse driver with emumouse.com in two button
emulation mode. In at least one case, Msd shows a bus mouse
despite the fact that on the Linux side its actually /dev/cua1.
Some customers have better results setting the mouse driver
in NewDeal to Generic Digitizer, Generic Light Pen, or Generic Tablet.
Set your printer port to DOS in NewDeal's Preferences, Computer.
Attempts to use the BIOS or 7 settings may result in a crash.
SCO Unix MERGE DOS emulator
A customer has reported success using this program with
early versions of NewDeal software. SCO is an acronym for Santa Cruz
Operation, a Unix vendor. MERGE is a full screen DOS emulation that
runs on SCO Unix.
